Her husband has been caught in the storm of justice, suspended from his functions as a state employee he will very soon be in the sights of French and International cycling federations. For now Jeannie Longo has not been accused of anything, either criminal or sporting. Cleared by Patrice Ciprelli in police custody, “this is for my personal use” and by the Prosecutor Coquillat, “there is no evidence to say that the EPO would have been used by the wife of Mr. Ciprelli”, the Dauphinoise appears for the time to be outside of the case, unrelated to the charges against her husband and coach.
Ironically, the future of the champion has never looked so bleak. It is unclear how, at age 53, she could launch a campaign for selection to the Olympic Games in London, without the presence of her husband who has often been presented as her her evil genius. Under judicial supervision pending the outcome of the investigation, Patrice Ciprelli no longer allowed to attend cycle races, and cannot therefore accompany his wife to potential venues. He who was present at of all the victories of the girl from Saint-Gervais since 1979 must now ask permission to leave the country, that privilege may not be granted easily as the couple used to spend a lot of time in the U.S. at the approach to big goals. “She will not go to London” Ciprelli told investigators during his detention. Tarnished image, low morale, the challenge seems too much. And doubts persisting despite the confessions, are being raised in the minds of those who decide on the Olympic team.
David Lappartient head of the French Cycling Federation said “I think the police must have asked Patrice Ciprelli who the EPO was being bought for. You’ve got to ask yourself about the links between Patrice and the use these products could have been put to by Jeannie Longo”. The amount of EPO seems to point to the consumption by an individual. “There are really strong doubts about Jeannie Longo today, but these products could have been for Jeannie, other athletes or both”, Lappartient continued.
“I turned 50 and everything started to spin out of control,” Jeannie Longo said recently. She maybe didn’t realise how much at the time. Jeannie Longo, who’s future as a cyclist now seems behind her.
