Joelle Numainville Swerve Happy Dreamy girl Cyclocross Discussion Penelope Cruz

Shot Notes

On Monday morning at dawn Joanne Simpson started the first of her climbs covering the three roads that wind up to the summit of Mont Ventoux. She finished some 12 hours later as shadows on the Giant of Provence were lengthening. By completing the three climbs 49 year old Joanne entered into an elite group “Cinglés”, riders who have climbed to the summit on all three sides on the same day.

Joanne is no ordinary middle aged Englishwoman. She is none other than the daughter of Tommy Simpson, who died on the summit on the 13th of July 1967. Joanne rides the Ventoux every five years, normally on the 13th of July, the anniversary of Tom’s death but this year her sister was getting married so she delayed her ride by a month her attempt to join the elite group of Cinglés.

At the summit Joanne spoke to waiting journalists of “closing the circle”, of her joy and emotion at arriving at the summit but also of fleeting memories of her dad. “I came here to finish what my father couldn’t to do”. She also admitted to carrying a photo of Bradley Wiggins in her pocked “Bradley carried a photo of my dad when he climbed the Ventoux in the 2009 Tour de France, by winning the tour this year he’s completed a job started my dad”.
